John Fleming is the Head of Referee Development at the Scottish FA.
As a retired referee I was asked by a fan why the new extra referee’s assistants for European games are positioned on the same side of the park, beside the goal, as that covered by the linesman in that half. Is there a reason for this and would this extra pair of eyes not be better placed on the other side of the goal supporting the referee’s diagonal?
